Skip corn syrup-filled, pre-bottled steak sauce and try making this flavorful, lower-sugar recipe at home. While it isn't low carb, this gluten-free homemade steak sauce does eliminate any and all mystery ingredients; it makes use of raisins, balsamic vinegar, and orange juice for sweetness, along with tomato paste for body and a few additional pantry ingredients for flavor.
Makes about 5 cups
1 cup water
1 cup balsamic vinegar
1 cup Worcestershire sauce
3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup tomato paste
1/2 cup Dijon mustard
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup garlic cloves, peeled and halved
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
Pinch kosher or sea salt, plus more to taste
In a large saucepan, combine all of the ingredients and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Transfer the sauce to a blender and puree until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer set over a medium bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Let cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to serve. The steak sauce will keep for weeks in the fridge.
